Indigenous Roots Run Through Every Culture — Is Your Marketing Reflecting That?

Multicultural Marketing Means Recognizing the Layers Within Every Audience

Indigenous identity is not a single story. It threads through Latino, Asian, Black, and Pacific Islander communities — often unrecognized, but always present.

For multicultural marketing professionals, that reality changes everything. When we treat Indigenous heritage as something that only belongs to certain communities, we miss the deeper connections that exist across all of the audiences we serve. The grandmother who speaks an Indigenous language alongside Spanish. The Filipino family whose traditions predate colonization. The Black community whose Gullah Geechee heritage carries West African roots.

At The Imagen Group, we approach stakeholder engagement with the understanding that culture is layered. Authentic multicultural marketing means recognizing those layers , not flattening them for convenience.

Three principles guide our approach:

1. Research before you reach. Indigenous communities are not monolithic. Understand the specific nations, traditions, and histories relevant to your audience before crafting a message.

2. Representation matters in imagery. Stock photos of "diverse" groups often erase Indigenous features. Be deliberate about the visuals you choose — they signal who you see and who you don't.

3. Language is power. Many Indigenous communities are fighting to preserve their languages. Brands that acknowledge and respect that effort build trust that translation alone never could.

On this International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we invite our fellow marketers, PR professionals, and communicators to think beyond checkboxes. Indigenous culture isn't a category — it's a thread that runs through all of us.
